  • 25.01.2018

January 25, 2018 at 17.00 National Historical Museum of the Republic of Belarus holds a presentation of one of the most significant acquisitions of last year – a set of commemorative coins of the "Skaryna's Way" series . They are dedicated to the 500th anniversary of Belarusian printing and issued by the National Bank of the Republic of Belarus during 2015 – 2017.

The scale of the personality of Francysk Skaryna and his enlightenment activity is so significant in the domestic history that the National Bank couldn't but respond to this event. There are six cities on the "Skaryna's Way" coins series: Polotsk, Krakow, Padua, Venice, Prague, Vilnius. Those that played a big role in the life and activity of Skaryna, connected with his translation and printing of the Bible.

There are not only ancient images of these cities, but also signs and symbols that embody the essence of their connection with the enlightener. For example, there is an image of the famous Prague astronomical clock as a symbol of the city.

In addition, the Skaryna's first book is presented on the coins in the art and text interpretation: the beauty of the fonts, the variety of engravings, the refinement of the decor ... It is surprising how much information can be placed on a small surface of the coin.

The coins of the jubilee series were minted at the Lithuanian Mint by professionals of the highest qualification. The technology of oxidation used by them is almost manual: each coin bears a stamp of uniqueness. The numismatic package, which is now exhibited in the museum exposition, is a gift of the National Bank of the Republic of Belarus to the National Historical Museum.

Representatives of the National Bank of the Republic of Belarus will take part in the presentation. The designer of the monetary series will show an unusually beautiful author's footage – "Skaryna's Way" with elements of animation. An employee of the museum, the author of the scientific development of the series, will talk about the features of some Skaryna's engravings chosen for commemorative coins. There will be a test game on the themes of book printing and numismatics with the prizes.
