The National History Museum of Latvia, the largest repository of Latvian material culture, was founded in 1869, and is one of Latvia's oldest museums.
Exhibition “Amber – Jewel of the Baltic Sea” was one of the most successful exhibition projects in the Riga European Capital of Culture 2014 programme as part of "Amber Vein" thematic line.
The exhibition will tell about deposits of amber in the Baltic Sea and its distribution along the Amber Route, the role of minerals in mythology and folklore. Exhibits are evidences of archaeological amber, its form and application, ethnographic amber, and its role in the Latvian national costume and folk arts and crafts. The exhibits reflect the development of amber from ancient times to the present day: fibulae, buttons, beads, amber bundled with other materials, pendants, and newly formed shapes.
